(A minor rant) When I come to a red light, I stop with the nose of my car close to the stop bar. That’s why the stop bar exist: to tell you where to stop. There seems to be an increasing number of people in my city who believe that leaving a full car length between their nose and the stop bar is somehow the right thing, although they often have a change of heart and creep forward a few feet at a time over and over again. .Are they just trying to get a running start for hitting any pedestrians that might still be in the crosswalk when the light changes? Maybe one of you can explain this aberration to me.

Can’t. But I love the people that are so far forward in the left turn lane they don’t even trigger the arrow.

Yep! I’ve seen that one too. Always makes me laugh.

Some of it is the newer cars with low roof lines and the inability to see the light, but mostly I see it as the jackwads that just have to be in their phones at the light.

I love this. Also the people who leave twenty feet in between themselves and the car in front of them when stopped, despite there being heavy traffic, and backed up lights. I always swoop in in front of them, which saves me a solid 15 minutes when in rush hour traffic on one particular road. Those people’s bad driving habits allow me to cut my commute in half. Bless them.

I see this all the time. Personally I pull up to the line, or if the intersection is wonky, pull up to the closest point where I can still see the lights, but I’m never 20 feet back from the line.

I like the “drivers” here who stop so far back that the light sensor doesn’t detect their car, and they sit forever. I’ve honked at more than one.
The creeping forward irritates me too. Signs of incompetence.

Especially annoying when there’s a really short turn lane that you can’t get over into because the cars in front of you refuse to utilize the space in front of them, causing you to miss one or two full cycles of the turn arrows.

Always, ALWAYS at the limit line. Unless I’m turning right and need to see around the car in the next lane to watch for approaching traffic for a legal right on red. And even then, I stay OUT of the crosswalk. Right-on-red visibility is just one of many reasons why the other lanes need to stop at that limit line.

I stop ON the line. Except in the left turn lane, because people turning left from perpendicular traffic tend to cut into that lane like total idiots, consistently. Then I stop a few feet behind the line.

I always go right up to the line. Wasting space like that is bad driving etiquette... especially in city driving and especially in the left turn lane.
I’ve heard that some driving ed instructors recommend doing this so if you get rear ended, you’re less likely to get pushed into the intersection.
Personally I think it’s dumb and it’s another example of needing to tighten up driver licensing/training standards... as well as having driver retraining every 5 years or so.
This shit is as irritating as idiots who constantly have their high beams on... especially in the city... and especially when they are in the left turn lane across from you as you’re turning left in the opposite direction.

I seriously think many people feel like they have to SEE the line because otherwise they can’t tell where it is. I stop at it, unless there’s a red light camera and then I give an extra 2-4 foot buffer because I don’t trust them.

Tsuter nailed it - people stop early or leave big gaps in stopped traffic so they can play with their phones for an extra 2.2 seconds while the light is red. As a friendly gesture, I give them a big horn blast about 2.2 seconds after the light turns green. Cell phones are the bane of automotive enjoyment

Depends. If they are driving an automatic, a simple shift in the seat to get more comfortable can release enough pressure on the brake to cause a little creep.

Perhaps. But it seems like a big coincidence that the creepers are the ones who stop with paranoia 3 car lengths behind the nearest car.
I see this a lot, too, so a fair number of people are uncomfortable in their cars. I only creep forward if I can tell the person behind me needs room for some reason.
